How to start your day with peace and purpose

What are your parenting goals and what are your action steps to get there? I love answering parenting questions and I think this one from a workshop I did will resonate with a lot of parents today. Getting a morning routine down will give you the opportunity to watch your stress decrease and your parent power increase. When we win as parents our kids win, too! When we run the day, instead of the day running us, we create a meaningful purpose that wires our brains for happiness and success.

  • So I was doing a workshop and somebody said, “all right, tell me your whole game plan for parenting,” which is what I teach through the workshops, but they want the condensed version.  (02:11)

  • So what is your parenting goal for the day? This is not, how am I going to fix my kid today? That is not what I'm asking. I'm asking you to go in your own mind, in your own heart and your own soul and think about how what your goal for you is today. (07:02)

  • And it's because they did not have any self-regulation downtime during their day to process all that. And we're doing that to ourselves as grownups too. I meet, we are running from sunup to sundown and then when we go to lay down, uh, all of a sudden we're, we can't fall asleep. (10:31)

  • And you won't know like the specifics of the situation, but you can know like I'm deciding, I'm going to take three deep breaths until whoever is coming at me with a conflict, I'm going to need a minute to think about it. (14:52)

  • And she dug her heels in and was pitching a fit and did not want to do it. And I get it! From the outside, it looked like a behavior thing, but what it was, it was a cry that she wanted her mom's attention and wasn't getting it. (20:29)

  • And to make it feel like a team effort, like thank you guys, everybody, for picking up your own things, for doing what you need to do so we can all get where we need to go. Just taking that time to do that positive reinforcement just makes a huge difference.  (25:26)

  • I definitely don't get it right every time, but I take steps in that direction and having a morning plan where I actually write it down because a writing makes it go to your brain, um, and stick there a little bit better. (29:10)
